Sissinghurst: The White Garden

I visited Sissinghurst for the first time last week to see the garden planted entirely with white flowers. It was utterly glorious, a highlight was the exquisite scent of climbing rose, Rosa 'Mme Alfred Carrière'

The gardens were laid out by Harold Nicolson and plantings by his wife Vita Sackville-West; their designs were heavily influenced by Jekyll and Lutyens.

Mostly I feel that the world is getting smlaler by the day but reading all the australian blogs gives me a very different perspective. While we are freezing and living under gray skies, you are bathed in sunshine and enjoying spectacular color. I’m not complaining, the turn of each season is pleasurable but it does highlight our uniqueness. I love getting a glimpse into this part of your country. It reminds me of coastal Maine, where we vacation. There are little antique shops/sheds everywhere, used book barns around every corner and vegetables and fresh flowers for sale in many front yards. It’s paradise in my view- now we know there’s a version of it in another hemisphere. Love the “old is beautiful” sign- that may be my slogan for 2011! thanks for sharing your holiday.
